FAQ
Everything candidates ask about DANB-ICE.
- Who needs the DANB ICE?
- The Infection Control Exam (ICE) is the second DANB CDA component covering OSAP-aligned infection prevention. Many U.S. states accept ICE as proof of infection-control competency for dental assistants regardless of CDA pursuit.
- What is the DANB ICE format?
- The ICE is a 75-item multiple-choice computer-based exam delivered in a 60-minute sitting (per the DANB ICE Exam Outline). The blueprint splits across four domains: Prevention of Disease Transmission (20%), Prevention of Cross-contamination (34%), Process Instruments and Devices (26%), and Occupational Safety and Administration Protocols (20%).
- What is the DANB ICE pass mark?
- DANB reports a scaled score with 400 as the minimum passing score. Unofficial pass/fail is shown at Pearson VUE at exam end; the official report follows by email.
- How long should I study for the DANB ICE?
- Most candidates allocate three to five weeks of focused prep, emphasising Spaulding classification, autoclave parameters, CDC 2003 + 2016 dental settings updates, and OSAP standards. Memorising the bloodborne pathogens standard verbatim pays back.
- How often can I retake the DANB ICE?
- Per the 2026 DANB Candidate Handbook, there is no DANB-imposed limit on how many times a candidate may retake the ICE. Each attempt requires a new application + full fee (USD $270 traditional / $265 military). State boards may layer extra rules on top.
- What does Lumen's DANB ICE module cover?
- Lumen's ICE module follows the DANB content outline with the published weightings — items mapped to the four domains plus topic-level gap analysis. The diagnostic surfaces your weakest sub-areas (typically Prevention of Cross-contamination or Process Instruments and Devices) so you focus first.
