FAQ

Everything candidates ask about DANB-GC.

Who needs the DANB GC?
The General Chairside Assisting (GC) exam is the third DANB CDA component covering procedural support, dental materials, and instrumentation. Many U.S. states accept GC as evidence of general chairside competence for state certification or registration.
What is the DANB GC format?
The GC is a 95-item multiple-choice computer-based exam delivered in a 75-minute sitting (per the DANB GC Exam Outline). The blueprint splits across four domains: Evaluation (17%), Patient Management and Administration (17%), Chairside Dentistry (50%), and Dental Materials (16%).
What is the DANB GC pass mark?
DANB reports a scaled score with 400 as the minimum passing score. Unofficial pass/fail is shown at the Pearson VUE testing centre at the end of the exam; the official score report follows by email within a few weeks.
How long should I study for the DANB GC?
Most candidates allocate four to six weeks of focused prep, heavier on dental materials, restorative procedures, and tooth-numbering systems (Universal, FDI, Palmer). Strong instrumentation recall and four-handed dentistry sequencing pays back.
How often can I retake the DANB GC?
Per the 2026 DANB Candidate Handbook, there is no DANB-imposed limit on how many times a candidate may retake the GC. Each attempt requires a new application + full fee (USD $270 traditional / $265 military). State boards may layer extra rules on top.
